Hubei University of Technology

Hubei University of Technology was originally established in 1952. In 1984, Hubei Institute of Light Industry merged with Hubei Academy of Agricultural Machinery to form Hubei Polytechnic University, and was renamed as Hubei University of Technology (HBUT) in 2004. HBUT is a key development university of Hubei Province, HBUT has been assessed as “a high level, standard-setting, and backbone university of the province’s higher education system” by the Party Committee and the Provincial Government of Hubei Province. In 1986, HBUT earned the qualification to confer Master’s degrees, and won the title “the university with an excellent   graduate employment rate” in 2010. In 2014, it attained Tier 1 university status. In 2012 and 2016, it successively entered membership of the National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China Higher Educational Institutions.

HBUT covers an area of more than 1.06 square kilometers, with a building area of about 1 million square meters. HBUT has fully fledged supporting facilities and infrastructure for teaching, scientific research, and public services. The student apartments are equipped with air-conditioning and hot water supply. As an outstanding university library in Hubei Province, the library is comprised of about 6 million volumes, and has an area of 46,000 square meters. HBUT offers a safe and smooth campus network, as well as a smart and fast campus service platform.

HBUT has established 16 schools and 1 affiliated college. HBUT enrolls students from a total number of 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities throughout China, and has an enrollment of more than 20,000 full-time students of all types, including over 5,800 postgraduates.  

      HBUT currently has more than 1,335 full-time faculty members, of whom over 674 are professors and associate professors, over 623 are doctoral supervisors and master’s supervisors. The proportion of teachers with doctorate degrees has reached more than 51%. HBUT has recruited 33 national elites, and more than 151 provincial experts specializing in various fields. In 2017, HBUT became the first provincial university in Hubei Province to build a 111 Center for discipline innovation and talent introduction, approved by State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. 

HBUT now has 68 undergraduate programs, of which 4 are featured nationally for innovative content, 3 are selected programs of the “Excellent Engineer Scheme” of the Ministry of Education, 7 are comprehensive pilot reform programs of university-industry cooperation initiated by the Ministry of Education, 8 are comprehensive pilot reform programs of Hubei Province, 8 are branded programs of Hubei Province, 9 are selected programs of “Professional Training Scheme for Strategic Emerging (Backbone) Industries” of Hubei Province, and 1 is a selected program of “Pilot Program for Nurturing Outstanding Innovative Professionals” of Hubei Province. HBUT has 3 teaching teams that have reached the provincial level of competence. Its program of Civil Engineering from School of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment has passed the professional assessment of undergraduate programs by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. Its program of Mechanical Design & Automation from School of Mechanical Engineering, and program of Electrical Engineering & Automation from School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering have obtained accreditation from the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association. HBUT has built 2 state-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 key provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers; 10 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 state-level university student practice centers (off campus), 3 provincial standard-setting centers for internship and practical training, 2 provincial centers for internship and practical training, 9 provincial university student innovation centers, 3 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration centers and 1 provincial professionals education center for outsourcing services. In addition, HBUT has 3 state-level “Boutique Video Open Courses”, 4 provincial “Boutique Video Open Courses”, 8 “Boutique Resource Sharing Courses” as well as 21 Hubei Boutique Courses.

A joint training Ph.D program has been ongoing since 1993, and HBUT obtained provincial doctoral authorization in 2001 according to its overall strength. In 2006, 5 doctoral programs have been established at the provincial level. HBUT has trained 28 cohorts of postgraduates; 5,000 students altogether. In recent years, it has proactively aimed to satisfy national and regional strategic demands of the development of green technologies as well as the greening of traditional technologies, and has endeavored to implement the “135+” Discipline Developmental Strategy focusing on green technologies. HBUT has 1 provincial leading discipline, 5 provincial characteristic disciplines, 4 key (nurtured) provincial disciplines, 2 provincial leading and characteristic discipline collections, and 36 disciplines under the “Hubei Provincial Chutian Scholar Scheme”. HBUT has established 20 general Master’s degree conferral programs, 75 specific Master’s degree conferral programs, 9 professional Master’s degree conferral programs (Master of Engineering, Master of Business Administration, Master of Arts, Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Master of Public Administration), 12 fields in which Master of Engineering degrees can be conferred, and 4 vocational Master’s degree conferral programs.   

HBUT has 1 key laboratory accredited by the Ministry of Education, 1 postgraduate innovation center accredited by the Ministry of Education, 1 state-level technology conversion demonstration center, 3 post-doctoral research centers, 13 provincial postgraduates research centers, 2 provincial collaborative innovation centers, 5 provincial key laboratories, 14 provincial engineering technology (research) centers, 2 provincial international cooperation centers, 2 provincial engineering laboratories, 6 provincial humanities & social sciences key research workshops, and 28 provincial university-industry co-constructed research and development centers. HBUT has won 206 awards including 9 national ones. Since 2012, HBUT has presided over more than 1,800 scientific research programs at the provincial level and above. HBUT has also initiated and/or participated in 372 national programs, including 28 major specialized projects under the “973 Program” and “National Science & Technology Key Program”, and 240 national projects of natural science, social science and art funds (including 3 fund projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, Outstanding Youth Foundation of China, and National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars). HBUT has published more than 400 monographs and teaching materials, over 900 papers on SCI and 1600 papers on EI. With more than 1,600 authorized patents, HBUT has earned 89 awards for science and technology, such as 1 national prize and 14 provincial prizes. In addition, HBUT has been qualified at Confidentiality Level 2 for weapon and military equipment research and manufacturing, as well as being accredited in national quality standard for military products. Under the major demand of regional industrial development and technology research, HBUT keeps a long-term cooperation with more than 300 large and medium-sized enterprises, which positions it near the top of the ranking list for Science and Technology Service for Economic and Social Development of Hubei Province among provincial higher educational institutions. HBUT undertakes 3 publications, namely China Mechanical Engineering (, Hubei Nongjihua (, and Journal of Hubei University and Technology ( The China Mechanical Engineering has won “Top 100 Outstanding Academic Journals of China” for 12 years straight and is highly rated in “Journals of China with Highest International Academic Impact”, “Boutique Technical Journals of China”, and “Top 100 Technical Journals of China”.

Throughout its longstanding course of operation, HBUT has developed the motto and spirit of “the cultivation of virtue, expansion of knowledge, pursuit of truth, and stimulation of innovation” and the standard of “student-oriented, teacher first, free development and global vision” as well as the educational philosophy is to build a modern university with quality, talents, technology, opening-up and rule of law, improving the conception of management as “principal responsibility system under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, professor governing teaching, democratic administration”. On the basis of “located in Hubei and serve the industry”, HBUT aims to foster high-qualified applied professionals who possess innovative and entrepreneurial competence as well as practical skills, and proactively strengthens the innovative “721” professionals education reform, the quality of education continuously improving and the social impact continually extending.


    In recent years, HBUT students have achieved outstanding accomplishments in a variety of national competitions, and have made a number of breakthroughs as well. HBUT students have won more than 2,100 national awards covering all sorts of subjects over the past 5 years; more than 60 national awards in various scientific, technological and cultural competitions, of which over 20 are first prizes. In addition, HBUT students have won highest ranking awards in competitions such as National “Challenge Cup” University Student Entrepreneurial Plan Competition, National “Challenge Cup” Academic and Scientific Works Competition, Mathematical Modeling Competition, English Competition, Innovative Mechanical Design Competition, Structural Design Competition, Electronic Design Competition, Smart Automobile Competition, National University Student Social Practice Evaluation, and so on. In sports events, HBUT basketball team has broken into the Top 16 of CUBA; HBUT students have won championships in both the Men’s Singles (the Super Team) and the Women’s Singles (the Super Team) of the National Table Tennis Tournaments. HBUT has maintained over 94% employment for many years; in fact, it has been so consistent in this rate that Hubei Provincial Department of Education has honored HBUT with an exemption from ongoing verification. Over the years, HBUT attaches great importance to innovative and entrepreneurial activities among students as it has established a Student Pioneering Park and has been awarded “Hubei Provincial University Student Entrepreneurship Demonstration Center”. Some successful entrepreneurs have won honors such as “Top 100 Stars of Village Officials”, “Star of Self-improvement among National College Students”, “Star of Entrepreneurship in Hubei Province”, and so on. HBUT won the title “Higher Educational Institution of Reform on Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship” as the first group of universities national wide in 2016.

HBUT holds to the opening-up of its operations and has seen continuous development of the internationalization of education. As honored “Hubei Provincial Advanced Organization for Intensifying Opening-up”, it has established cooperative relationships with more than 80 universities, colleges and research institutes from more than a dozen countries and regions such as the USA, Germany, France, the UK, and Taiwan. It has started 8 international cooperative programs of undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with approximately 1300 full-time students. Additionally, HBUT has enrolled more than 800 overseas students and 50 standing foreign faculty members are studying and working at HBUT. HBUT has established 9 international joint scientific research platforms (centers), such as Phillips Hydrophilic Colloid Research Center of Hubei University of Technology, Sino-American Energy Research Center of Hubei University of Technology, Sino-French Civic Sustainable Development Platform of Hubei University of Technology and so on.

HBUT has been awarded various honorary titles many times such as “Advanced Organization for High Graduate Employment Rate” among Chinese higher educational institutions, “Hubei Provincial University of Good Reputation”, “Best Civilized Organization of Hubei Province”, “Advanced Organization for Science and Technology Services in Hubei Province”, “Hubei Provincial Advanced Organization for Foreign Affairs”, “Hubei Provincial Role Model for Legal Operation”, “Hubei Provincial Advanced Organization for Professional Affairs”, “Provincial Advanced Grassroots Party Organization”, “Hubei Provincial Advanced Organization for Party Development”, “Provincial Advanced Party Committee Center Group”, “Provincial Advanced University with Five Virtues Leadership”, “Top 10 Hubei Provincial University for the Encouragement of Reading”, and so on.
